Why Your Network Isn’t Secure

I’m going to give you four steps you can quickly take to improve your network security. But first, let me tell you a story that illustrates the two big reasons your network isn’t as secure as you think it is.

My primary job was to manage the cleaning of a breached network when I spent three days with a company on the West Coast earlier this year. Secondary responsibilities included improving security by making immediate changes to the network hardware and software, updating the network documentation, creating new policies, and providing training. Simply put, the objectives were to clean the network, and make it less vulnerable to future attacks. Several times each day I heard some variation of these sentences: “I’ve tried to get them to spend the money for (fill in the blank),” and “It would be great if we had time to do this stuff, but there aren’t enough hours in the day.”

Experience with companies like this one have taught me that the quality of a company’s network security can consistently be graphed to two factors: (1) budget, and (2) human resources.

Let’s take a closer look at both of these problems.
