The Psychology of Moses: Why Moses Broke The Stone Tablets

I now understand why Moses broke the stone tablets. I understand his frustration, his despair, his anger, his sense of futility. “These are supposed to be God’s people. Look how God has blessed them! And yet they turn their collective backs on him so quickly, so completely, so effortlessly!”

If you don’t know the whole story, it’s in the Book of Exodus. The part about Moses breaking the tablets is in Exodus 32:1–19.

I used to think, “What a fool Moses was on that particular day! He momentarily lost his mind! How impatient! Where is the love and compassion for God’s people — love and compassion that Moses himself needed and experienced? What a jerk!”

Well, now it’s my turn. I’m the jerk. Right now I’m pretty much drained of compassion for God’s people.

You see, for years I’ve been writing God’s word to his people. I’ve been bringing the message of love and compassion, grace and mercy, forgiveness and reconciliation. I’ve been teaching the Bible, preaching the Bible, and re-writing the Bible’s message in blog posts and books. But I feel like a minnow trying to swim upstream in a Class 5 rapids.
