The Day Jesus Couldn’t Feed the Multitude

Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” (John 6:5–9, ESV)

Jesus walked over to the boy, knelt down, and said, “If you’ll trust me, I can feed all these people.”

The boy opened his eyes wide, and said, “Wow! I trust you!”

Jesus smiled, held out his hands, and said to the boy, “Excellent! Now, give me your five loaves and two fish.”

The boy’s eyes opened even wider, and he looked very dismayed. “Why should I give you my loaves and fishes?”

“That’s where your trust comes in,” Jesus replied. “Your trust in me becomes real when you act on it. Until then, it’s only words.”

The boy’s expression changed from dismay to indignation. He was an American Republican Christian boy, and Jesus…
