“Look at the pampas grass,” my wife said. “It’s so beautiful!” I agreed.

We were driving home from church today. We live in a small town on the Oregon coast, and pampas grass grows well here. It’s a common decorative outdoor plant. You’ll see it in front of businesses on Highway 101, in parks, and in front and back yards.

It’s a day of change — at least, weather-wise. There are clouds coming in from the Pacific Ocean, and the winds come and go; now gentle, now strong, now boisterous, now calm.

Waiting at a stoplight, I admired the pampas grass blowing gently sideways, and then the breeze stopped for a moment, and the grass straightened and stood still. That was when I noticed something that had never come to my attention before. I said to my wife, Penney, “I just realized something. Part of what makes the pampas grass beautiful is the wind. It’s pretty even when it’s still, but it’s far more beautiful when the wind takes it.”

There is a wind that makes you and I beautiful. Male or female, young or old, in a wedding gown or hand-me-downs, formal clothes or work clothes, we can be moved to beauty by this wind.
