How to think wisely, swiftly, and accurately, for every occasion.

I was going to write a science fiction novel in which I introduced my concept of Modal Thinking, but I decided a briefer introduction would be just as effective. Probably more effective, because science fiction doesn’t appeal to everyone.

We have to get a couple of quick ideas out of the way before we can begin.

1. This article is not about modal logic. If you want to learn about modal logic, just open your favorite search engine and you’ll find plenty of information.

2. This article is not about modes of thought, as classically taught. For example, you can open your browser again and find a lot of information about thinking in focused mode and diffused mode. It’s fine to understand what focused thinking and diffused thinking are, but knowing what they are won’t help you solve problems any better.

3. This article is not about the book entitled Modal Thinking, written by Alan R. White.

Because of the potential for confusion, I wish I could come up with a better name than Modal Thinking. But what would I call it? Strategies for solving different types of problems? Structured Operational Thought Sequences (SOTS)? I dunno. Modal Thinking seems to work, as a simple and accurate descriptive term.
