Magic and Sorcery In The Bible

Talking animals. Weather control. Transmutation. The Bible is a rich source of stories about magic and wizardry, but the magic is seldom talked about. Here’s a list of some of the more surprising practices in the Bible that were glossed over in Sunday School.

1. Music as therapy. I Sam. 16:14–23.

2. Casting lots to make a decision and to know God’s will. I Sam. 14:38–43.

3. Changing inanimate material into living creatures (Moses and the ten plagues. Example: Exodus 8:17, the dust turned to gnats).

4. Changing inanimate material into living creatures (Aaron’s rod becomes a serpent. Example: Exodus 7:8–12).

5. Death results from a curse (the death of all the firstborn in Egypt). Exodus 12:29.

6. Talking animals (a snake). Genesis 3:1–7.

7. Transmutation (turning one element into another). (Moses and the ten plagues, Exodus 7–12. Example: water into blood, Exodus 7:20).

8. Spontaneous generation of life. (Moses and the ten plagues. Example: frogs. Exodus 8:1–15).

9. Weather control. (Moses and the ten plagues. Example: thunder, hail, and lightning. Exodus 9:23–24).

10. Sickness results from a curse. (Moses and the ten plagues. Example: boils. Exodus 9:8–12).

11. Use of an object as an aid to magic. (Moses and the ten plagues, Exodus 7–12). Note several examples of the use of Moses’ rod (Exodus 9:23) and…
