How To Stay Current In Your Field

Want to stay current in your field? A lot of fields and career specialties (not just technology!) are changing so rapidly that staying current is a never-ending task. You need a plan, some sort of method. Well, I’m here to help!

1. Subscribe to some email newsletters relevant to your specialty. I know, some of them seem sort of spammy, but during the sales pitch you’re going to be seeing buzzwords about the newest, latest, and greatest. What are the new topics in your field? These are the things you need to study.

2. Now that you know what the topics are, research these topics. Hint: you shouldn’t be able to research these new topics by buying books. To stay current, you should be learning about them before books exist. I mean, fine, buy a book if you can find one — but check out things like the publication date. Is it really about the new technology, or is it about the established technology that the new technology is replacing?

3. White papers are your friend. White papers are a sales tactic, sure. But the way they go about it is super useful. They sell by providing information and education to the target audience. Here’s the outline for almost all white papers:
