Did God Really Say…?

“If my people, who are called by my name… will turn from their wicked ways…”
(II Chronicles 7:14)

Christians routinely misinterpret this passage to mean “the nation,” or “America.”
That is not what it means.
That is not what it says.

God is speaking about the people who are called by his name. God is speaking about the people of faith.

Currently, Christians are quoting this passage to “prove” their point that Americans are being punished by God for their godlessness.

Christian, I have a message for you. If God is punishing anyone with COVID-19, it’s you.

You have put political power ahead of holiness. You have called evil “good,” and good, “evil.” You have ripped children from their parents. You have deprived the poor of food and medical care. You have closed your eyes and hardened your heart to the plight of the immigrant. You have voted for a poverty wage, not a living wage. You have allowed the winds of racism to blow with fresh intensity across the land.

Hear the word of the Lord:

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
(II Chronicles 7:14)
